Dog Obedience - Training Your Dog
It is every pet owners responsibility to make sure that their dog is well behaved. At the very least they need to have their pet trained well enough that they will not put other people in danger or commit property damage by digging up the neighbor's plants. The question that needs to be addressed is what method is best for teaching one's dog obedience?

Some people take a very authoritarian route with their dog by yelling at it and even spanking it. However most experts would agree that yelling and spanking, while they might work, are not the most effective method of training and will also result in the dog becoming afraid of their owners.

What is the point in having a furry companion if they are going to live in fear of their owner? For instance if you ever see dogs who are 'head shy,' which means they shy away from hands when someone goes to pet their head, that is likely a dog that has been smacked in the head enough times to have an instinctive fear of hands.
Really the best method of training is through positive reinforcement. When the dog obeys then they should be rewarded with a treat, encouraging words and a lot of petting. By rewarding the good behavior that the owner wants to instill in the dog, they will make their pet associate positive feelings with taking those actions. Through a well thought out reward structure it is positive to perfectly train a dog to be obedient without ever resulting to any type of violent or angry outburst.
One thing to keep in mind about this type of positive training method is that it is important to not go overboard with handing out treats. Too many and the dog will expect one every time. This in itself can make them misbehave.
